Children of Time Awards, Round One Aftermath
As you know, the Children of Time awards have finished their voting, and posted their winners. And, as it turns out, the pages listing the nominees have been removed from the site - which among other things, makes it difficult to continue reviewing the ones I didn't get to review previously.
But, it also seems that the new round of nominations will begin on 1 January, and go through the end of the month, so perhaps this is just as well. There are just over 100 categories, all told (although not all are DW - some are Torchwood, or Sarah Jane Adventures), and even with each category capped at 15 fics apiece, that's quite a few new fics for me to review.
I cannot get them all in a month. Nor will I try. But I will try to review a decent percentage of them, and with luck, introduce you to stories you wouldn't have read otherwise. Which, after all, is the point.
However, for now - let's look at the winners of round one.
There were fifteen Doctor Who categories in which to vote - of these fifteen, six of the stories I voted for won or received Runner-Up in the categories for which I voted them. (A seventh story won a separate category, but at least it won!)
(And before you ask - no, I did not vote for Crossroads. Good lord, people, there were too many good fics on that list - I doubt the person who nominated Crossroads voted for Crossroads, in the end.)
But more importantly, there were at least six fics for which I voted, and did not win anything, and should have. I'm going to list them here, because I do think they deserved the win - and as the rules allow for nominees to be nominated again, I believe they should go up again.
So, in no particular order:
Six Stages by
gowdie, reviewed in Part One.
Now, Gowdie did win the title of Best New Author - which makes it doubly ironic that her fic didn't get so much as a nod when it came to the final standings. Moreover, Gowdie's written several other pieces since Six Stages was posted, and all of them have shown the same joy and humor as her first. Yes, she totally deserved the Best New Author nod. However, I'd like to see one of her fics hit the big time, and Six Stages is definitely of the best, and deserves a nod of its own.

There is quite simply no other Ten/TenII/Rose fic quite like this out there. It's a delight to read, from start to finish, and has so many lovely possibilities going on within it. TenII is working out to be an absolutely fascinating interpretation of the Doctor as a human, and the interactions between he and his crew mates are splendid.
Not One Line by rickmaniac101, reviewed in Part One.
Yes, it's River Song. Yes, it's River/Doctor, and we all know I have a weakness for that. But this truly is a fantastic work, mapping out River's life with and without the Doctor, and by the end, you feel for River, far more deeply than you might have expected. You might not like River, but you'll understand her. This fic deserves more attention that it received.
Ulysses by
rheanna27, reviewed in Part Seven.
It's a twisty, turny, time-whimey alternate look at how the end of Human Nature/Family of Blood might have ended. There are a thousand versions of those episodes in fanfic form. This is like none of them. It's fantastic and wonderful and even if you hate Martha (and I'm not a fan), you'll admire her in this.
More Than an Echo by
samfeasnor, reviewed in Part Nine.
The best Jenny!fic out there. Period. It's sweet and funny and sad and utterly fantastic. Jenny would make her father proud, and Sam should be proud of what she's done with her. This series of short one-shots hasn't gotten near the attention it deserves.

This is the sort of twisty timey-whimey nonsense that has been known to give me headaches. Therefore, pass the aspirin and dive right in. It's a brilliant look at Ten's desperation following Last of the Time Lords, and it's easy to believe that his actions could very well have been canon.
